  1. Phonetics is the study or representation of
  2. vocal sounds. The varying sounds that humans
  3. make are transcribed on paper as letters of
  4. the International Phonetic Alphabet. For
  5. example the word "cistern" is phonetically
  6. transcribed as /sistn/. The "er" part of
  7. "cistern" is not transcribed because it
  8. is not pronounced by humans in speech. The
  9. slashes (/) are the accepted method of
  10. showing a transcription. Phonetics is used
  11. for television in writing subtitles because
  12. of its quickness. The transcriptions are put
  13. to wider use in PHONOLOGY.
